Morgan Freeman Plays a Miracle Maker on Dolphin Tales

Oscar winner Morgan Freeman came on Live! With Regis & Kelly today to promote the newly released movie (September 23), Dolphin Tale, released in theaters throughout the U.S. It placed third in last weekend’s box office revenue, bringing in over $19,500,000, according to box office mojo.

Dolphin Tale is a true story about a dolphin named Winter that got trapped in a crab trap and lost her tail.

In the movie, Freeman plays Dr. Ken McCarthy, who is given the job of creating a new prosthetic tail for Winter. The star-studded cast also includes Harry Connick, Jr, Ashley Judd, Nathan Gamble, Cozi Zuehlsdorff, and Kris Kristofferson.

The dolphin, Winter, lives in the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, where the motto is “Rescue, Rehabilitate, and Return.” Morgan Freeman described how having her tail caught, then ultimately having it removed, was affecting Winter’s spine and causing scolli0sis. The clip below shows Morgan’s first meeting with Winter.

Freeman also talked briefly about his Discovery Channel show, “Through the Wormhole”. When asked if he was into science, he said he was more into studying the cosmos. In answer to the question, ‘Do you believe in life after death’? Mr. Freeman cycled through the question by saying he believed that life and death go hand in hand and therefore he believes that there is life after death. Apparently he’s also a philosopher?

There wasn’t discussion about his hand except to briefly say it was coming along. He damaged the nerves in his left hand, which is also his dominant hand, during a 2009 car accident. His hand was paralyzed, though there have been reports it is getting better. I had hoped to get details about how this vivacious man copes with this disability, particularly with regard to being on camera.

The movie is in theaters now in both 2D and 3D and is a great film to take the family to!
