The Dr. Oz show opens today with the great doctor talking about how carbohydrates work in your body and he gives us ways to cheat the cravings for these foods. Lisa Lillien, the Hungry Girl, come out and has teamed up with Oz to give us 5 new healthy alternatives to foods that would normally pack on the pounds. Oz explains that foods like beans, veggies, and meats actually stay in our system longer and keep us feeling full. He went on to point out that foods like pasta contain refined carbs that give us very little nutritional value and will actually cause us to be hungry again faster. He says this cycle is what kills most people’s diets.
Lisa points out that we can “cheat” our way into losing weight by making little substitutes in our favorite dishes that will bulk them up and make us feel fuller. She shows us how to make dishes that have potatoes, pasta, and other “bad” foods in a way that cuts the calories and satisfies our taste buds. The first dish is another twist on everyone’s favorite, Mac and Cheese, and she call it her Cheeseburger Mac Attack. The ingredients are: 1 ⅓ cups low calorie, high fiber Elbow Macaroni, 10 ounces lean Ground Turkey, ½ cup Onion, chopped, 2 tablespoons Ketchup, 3 cups Cauliflower, frozen, 2 tablespoons Light Sour Cream, 2 slices 2% American Cheese, 5 wedges light Swiss Cheese, 2 Scallions, sliced, Salt and Pepper. First, cook the pasta half the time it says on the package, mix the turkey, ketchup, onion, cauliflower, and pasta in a crock pot and cook for three hours. Add in the rest of the ingredients and cook until the cheese is melted in good. This dish has only 300 calories per serving.
Lisa had another “cheat’ for those of us that love french fries. She calls it her “Grin & Carrot Fries”. Just take carrots and slice them in thin “french fry” shaped pieces. Place them loosely on a baking sheet and sprinkle with sea salt. Bake in 425 degree oven for about 15 minutes and then flip them over and bake another 15 minutes or until the are crispy. You will think you are eating french fries but you are actually eating a healthy low calorie snack. Lisa also shared her “out of the box” snack that she loves and uses. They are: Yasso frozen Greek yogurt pops, Doctor Kracker Seedlander Crispbreads, Guiltless Gourmet Tortilla Chips, Grin ‘n Carrot Fries, Bear Naked Soft Baked Granola Cookies, VitaTop Muffins and PB Thins.
Clint Carter and Ary Nunez come on the show to review a few products sold on TV. First, we have all seen the infomercials about the Ad Glider and how it is supposed to allow you to work out while watching TV. Ary commented on how it felt like he did 100 situps in 3 minutes when using this machine and both say the product works great. Next, they looked and the “Sandbell.” This is a simpler barbell that is easily packed away under a bed. Ary says this product has value and is a lot safer than having free weights laying around the house. they give this their seal of approval also. In the end, Oz and his guests tell everyone to look closely at any TV products because some are great and some are just gimmicks.
That is the show for today. Check back tomorrow for another recap of the latest Dr. Oz news.
