Dr. Oz Recap 5/11/2012: Lose Weight Without Exercise?

The Dr. Oz show is all about losing weight effortlessly today by incorporating Ayurvedic Medicine into your daily routine. This ancient form of medicine has been used successfully for centuries in Asian cultures and now Oz is giving us all the details on how it works. Sunita Mohan is up first on the show and she says that you can use this “lifestyle” as a way to lose weight without having to count calories or exercise. The program works by balancing out your body functions. When all the systems in the body are working in unison, weight loss becomes a natural result.

Oz brings out three women who have been using Sunita’s methods for a few months and they reveal that they have lost 56 pounds without diet or exercise. Sounds too good to be true but Oz is not known for being tricked or giving out false information. Mohan gives us a few of her secrets. First, she gives us a Green Mung Bean Soup Recipe that she says will shed 5 pounds almost instantly if we eat it for three days straight. Oz says to make sure you take a multivitamin if you do this. To make the soup, just soak 1 cup of the beans overnight, cook the beans the next day until soft adding a little salt if you like. Heat 1 tablespoon of Sunflower oil in a pan and add 1/2 teaspoon of mustard seeds. Cook until the seeds pop. Add in ¼ teaspoon Hing, 1 Bay Leaf, ½ teaspoon Turmeric, 1 ½ teaspoons chopped Ginger,½ teaspoon chopped Garlic, and 1 teaspoon Cumin & Coriander and stir well. Remove from heat. Now take 1 ½ teaspoons Lemon Juice, 1 teaspoon raw Cane Sugar, and 2 cups of water and place in a pot. Add in the beans and the other ingredients and bring to a boil. Let this simmer for about 45 minutes and eat. She suggests that we all need to eat papaya and drink hot lemonade for at least 6 months to get our system working properly. Her hot lemonade is just adding lemon, ginger, and honey to a cup of hot water. Sunita says there are 6 flavors that we need to lose weight and they are: astringent, bitter, pungent, salty, sour and sweet. You can get these easily by adding Banyan Botanical Kitchari Spice Mix to all of your cooking. It is readily available in most places. Finally, she says we should gargle with Sesame Oil. Yes, it will take a little getting used to but she says this will help our digestion and get our bodies shedding pounds. Just keep trying until you can do it for 5 or 10 minutes.

Candace Badgett is next up on the show and she is talking about Ayurvedic Massage Techniques to shed pounds and get healthy. She says a balanced and relaxed body and mind is the key to losing weight. Oz has said stress causes weight gain for some time now. First, she shows us a Udvartana Facial Mask Recipe. Just mix Chickpea Flour, Herbal Oil, Kapha Oil in Spring, Pitta Oil in Summer or Fall, or Vata Oil in winter. You want this to be about as thick as peanut butter. Apply to the face and let sit for 5 minutes and rinse. She has two types of massage also. First, Svedanam is an oil massage with good pressure followed by a steam bath. Candace also says you should put a cold towel on your head immediately after the massage. Second, Oz gets a Shirodhara massage. This is where warm oil is poured over your forehead. She says we can do something similar at home by standing in the shower and letting the warm water pour over our foreheads. This is supposed to trigger your brain into releasing hormones that make you feel better.

Kimberly Snyder is up next and she has a 5 day miracle vitamin plan to jump start your diet. It is basically things Oz has talked about at different times and here is a brief run down on what you need. Mix 1/2 cup of sunflower seeds, 3/4 cup dried apricots, and 1/2 cup of hazelnuts. Eat this daily as a snack mix. Sunflower seed are loaded with vitamin D and actually help improve lung function. Next, eat 1 cup of Portobello mushrooms daily to boost your brain function. Third, 1.5 cups of nutritional yeast daily will give you a good B vitamin boost and improve your digestion. Fourth, 1 cup of Kale daily will help your liver function. Fifth, 1 gram if Kimbu daily will boost your thyroid. Sixth, Alpha Lipoic Acid in greens or in a supplement, 300 mg daily, will give you more energy and help your skin look younger by reducing wrinkles. Seventh, 2 tablespoons of Sage added to a cup of hot water daily will help your cells shed fat. Finally, mix 2 tablespoons canned pumpkin with 1/2 teaspoon each of milk and honey to make a great wrinkle fighting facial mask. Let is stay on for 5 minutes and then rinse off.
