Dr. Oz Recap 1/14/2013: Kiwi Energy Boost, C3G Fat Burner And New Healthy Oils

Dr. Oz is all about getting you extra energy safely and new anti-aging secrets that will help you lose weight and reduce your stress. He starts off by saying that energy drinks can boost your energy but they are full of caffeine and sugar and some people get a big crash shortly after using them. He says if you feel tired all day and depend on energy drinks just to keep you going, you should try some of these alternatives that will give you the boost without the crash.

First, he says that Oatstraw Extract has been proven to increase the oxygen flow to the brain and you won’t get a crash later. Just put 2 teaspoons in your coffee or tea a day and you will be bouncing around without having to worry about running low on energy later. This is best for people who say they are tired all day. Next, for people who run out of gas about mid morning, you should use Rhodiola Extract. Oz says he uses this himself and recommends starting out at 100mg and increasing to 200mg if necessary.

Energy Bars are a great booster for those that seem to run out of steam in the middle of the afternoon. Oz gives his personal recipe for an easy no bake energy bar. Just mix 1 cup Quick Oats, 1/3 cup Tart dried Cherries, 1/2 cup Natural Peanut Butter, 3 tbsp. Honey, and 1 tsp. Vanilla. Spread the mixture onto a cookie sheet and put in the fridge until hard. Finally, Oz says we need more sleep at night. He says that we are getting exposed to more blue light from all of our gadgets and this is proven to cause sleep interruption. You can get a pair of Orange Glasses that filter out the blue light to fix this. Just wear them all afternoon and you will be more relaxed and sleep better.

Now we get new oils to use for healthy eating. Oz has Monica Reinagel on to talk about the different oils and how they are made. She says we need to use cold pressed or Expeller Pressed oils because it means there were no chemicals used or heat during the extraction process. This keeps all the natural antioxidants in the oil. Oz tells us about Hemp Seed oil. This is good for lowering blood pressure and hypertension, and is rich in Omega 3s and it adds a nutty flavor to foods when you cook with it. Next, Avocado Oil is a great substitute for Olive oil in your salad and has been proven to help your vision.

Oz has talked about how Peppermint Oil can help cure a headache and today he says it can help relieve your IBS. He says just add a few drops to your morning coffee or cocoa but be careful not to use too much or it may cause heartburn.

Oz says we are missing one of the biggest energy boosters of all time and it is in our produce isle. Kiwi fruit is a powerful little fruit that packs a big punch. Two of these little green furry fruits have twice the calcium in an orange, more potassium than a banana, and more fiber than a bowl of bran flakes all in a 100 calorie package. You should eat them every day and they are readily available and cheap.

Now everyone knows that exercise will get your metabolism revved up. Oz gives us three one minute exercises we need to do each morning. First, he says to clasp your hands together and raise them above your head as you inhale. Then lower them as you exhale. Repeat this for one minute to help clear the toxins from your body. Next, stand and hold your arms out then pointing forearms down. Kind of like a scarecrow. Now flap you arms rapidly for one minute to get the blood flowing. Finally, put your hands in front of you like you are praying. Slowly raise each leg up to your elbow and repeat for one minute.

Dr Eva Selhub is now out on the show to talk about new fat fighters. She starts out by saying that antioxidants are great for increasing longevity and losing weight. So what do you need to look for when shopping for antioxidant rich foods and supplements? First, she says Chicoric Acid is a great stress reducer and it lowers cortisol production and will help get rid of those aches and pains we all suffer from. You need to get 5 servings of this a week and it can be found in foods like basil and Chicory Root Powder. If you can’t get those then you can use a supplement called Dandelion Tincture and just add 30 drops of it to a glass of water.

Next, she says Pterostilbene is a proven memory booster and it is found in cranberries. You need to eat 1 cup cranberries, 1 glass of cranberry juice or peanuts at least three times a week. You can also get Pterostilbene supplements and you can take 50 to 150mg a day. Now she says that we need to get C3G to burn fat and it can be found in things like black beans. What this does is help the body get rid of fat and not store it for later use. You need to eat black rice or black beans three times a week. You can also take 1g of Black Bean Extract daily.

Now Oz gives us an anti-aging health quiz. For your hands, you can use vegetable shortening to make them look younger. Just put it on and then cover with gloves and your hands will be softer and younger looking. Next, if you notice that your grip is not what it used to be, you may be at risk for a stroke. Oz says that is one of the signs of a stroke. So if your grip suddenly goes light on you, you may need to get to a doctor. Sea Buckthorn is Oz’s miracle berry for anti-aging. If you wear high heels, you should only keep them on for three hours or you may experience knee and leg pain. Finally, Oz says rubbing pineapple on your face will tighten it and help reduce wrinkles.
