Dr. Oz, March 13, 2013, has Dr. Joel Fuhrman back with his new Super Immunity Diet that he says will help you lose weight and keep the sick days away. Now anyone that watches Oz regularly knows that Fuhrman believes that food is medicine. His recommendations are always based on nutrients we get from food to treat and prevent disease. This new diet is based on nutritarian foods that have high nutrient content and low calories. He says that most of us are using only 50% of our body’s immune ability and this can be a problem as we age.
After studying the eating habits on people around the world that live the longest, he has concluded that a nutrient dense diet is the key to a long and healthy life. He says if you follow his plan, you can boost your immune system close to 100% of its capacity in just a few months. After the recent Oz show about Antibiotic dangers, this may be the answer we need to keep those illnesses away and not build up immunity to common antibiotics.
There are 4 rules for the Super Immunity diet. First, you should base your meals on Phytonutrient-rich foods. These are foods like leafy green veggies, tomatoes, peppers and berries and they are loaded with antioxidants, folic acid, vitamin E and C and are low in calories. Second, Fuhrman says we need to eat slow absorbing foods like nuts, seeds, and berries and stay away from sugar and white flour. Third, we need to eat less meat and make it only 10% of our food intake. He says we need to think of meat as a condiment and not the main part of a meal. Finally, the more you chew your food, the more nutrients you get. Fuhrman says we usually chew our food about 15 times but we need to increase that to at least 25 times. I guess my mom was right when she said I needed to chew more when I was younger.
