The weekend box office numbers are in and it is good news for the little green minions as they take the number 1 spot at the theaters this weekend. Despicable Me 2 grossed a little over 82 Million with an early Wednesday release and it was all alone at the top. The Lone Ranger was in a distant second with just over 29 million in ticket sales. One of the most amazing things about the little minions is that this film only cost 79 Million to make so it is already a profitable venture for Universal Studios.
The Heat managed to take third spot followed by Monsters University and with both being over a week old, it was a respectable showing. So how will Disney try to spin this second place finish into a positive? Well, they can claim second but the numbers show that our favorite minions just blew them away. After all, Lone Ranger cost almost 215 Million to make so Disney needs almost 5 weeks of the same numbers just to show a profit.
This goes to show that sometimes these big studios can just budget themselves out of a hit and the little guy wins one every once in a while. Universal is no little guy but the total budget for DM2 was just a paltry sum compared to The Lone Ranger. The Heat is also profitable now as it has made over double the cost to produce the film. Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy have a stable and profitable venture that is sure to get them notice by smart studios that want talent and profits.
So what did you think of the top films this weekend? Please let us know by leaving a comment below. Do you think studios would be better of making smaller budget films that turn a profit or do you still long for the epic big budget movie?
