Katy Perry and Lady Gaga have both released new singles that have shot up the charts this week. Both artists constantly pull out the stops, with elaborate gimmicks to sell their music and brands. However, are these queens of pop really as original as they want you to believe? Some would answer a resounding “no” as interesting similarities to past artists are coming to light. Katy’s new single “Roar” has come under scrutiny as it sounds very much like Sara Bareilles’ “Brave.” Were Katy and her writers influenced by Sara’s song (even subconsciously), or was it a coincidence?
Likewise, some have noticed that Lady Gaga’s new “look” bears a striking resemblance to Colete Carr. And this is not the first time Lady Gaga has been called out for her lack of originality. When Gaga released her song “Born This Way,” Madonna fans were outraged because it sounded alarmingly similar to her “Express Yourself.” The Gaga/Madonna similarity strikes again, this time with Gaga’s new song “Applause” resembling Madonna’s “Girl Gone Wild.” Some might take this as flattery, but Madonna indicated anything but when she ripped Gaga apart on ABC News back in 2012 coyly commenting, “It feels reductive.” Of course, there are also the claims from Lina Morgana’s mother that Lady Gaga stole her complete identity from her daughter Lina.
What do you think? Are Katy and Gaga divas originals or copycats? Let us know by leaving a comment below. With shows like American Idol and The Voice giving us new talent hopefuls that are required to make it on their own voices and ability, is it really right for those that are already successful to take an easier route and copy others?
