Machete Kills has a cast list that would make many in Hollywood jealous with envy but it proves you need a real movie to capitalize on all that talent. If you told me that I could make a movie and I would get Carlos Estevez, AKA Charlie Sheen, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergera, Amber Heard, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding Jr., Danny Trejo, and Lady GaGa as the cast members, you would think a dead rat could make a film that would be worth watching. Director Robert Rodriguez squanders a great opportunity here with mindless gore and over the top theatrics.
This second effort does not have the appeal and “charm” that the first installment was full of. It is like Rodriguez decided to forget about every element except the over the top violence and bad jokes. Gone are the gritty shots that made the first film so much like the cult classic Grind House and we see a slicker and more mainstream film. Grind House and the first Machete showed Rodriguez’s ability to make us laugh at gross scenes and the dark humor was truly remarkable. It seems this director just threw all that out the window with this film.
Unlike the first Machete, you will find yourself wishing that the credits would hurry up and roll between the all too brief moments of shock and cheesy dialogue. You get bored, then Sofia Vergera straps on her machine gun bra and you are jolted awake for a few moments. This film is not boring because nothing is happening. It is boring because you keep seeing the same thing over and over again.
If you like mindless killing, then you will love this film. If you like heavy action and also an actual plot and dialogue, then skip this film. Machete Kills proves that a huge list of actors can’t make a terrible film good.
