Cutthroat Kitchen (3/2/14) on the Food Network is proving to be creative and living up to its name as host, Alton Brown, present the chefs with ever increasingly challenging sabotages which can almost instantly change the course of a contestant. No one is safe but those willing to spend the money can lend themselves some sense of protection…or can it? Who wins Cutthroat Kitchen this week? This recap details how things were thrown together this week as four chefs are challenged to overcome sabotages and implement strategies mixed with innovation to save as much money while winning each round to stack up to expectations.
The chefs this week include “Rebel” Terry French who cooks in extreme conditions, Chef Athena Palombi who wants to be a positive role model for her daughter, Chef Ashurina Younan who looks to kick some serious hindquarters, and Chef Adam who rose from the ranks of dishwasher to be top dog expects that his hard work will pay off in this competition.
As always, Alton explains the concepts of the competition from the auction bidding for sabotages to the challenges before handing each chef $25K to start.
ROUND ONE: Thirty minutes to make an All-American breakfast starting with sixty seconds to shop. What will everyone decide to thrown together? The first item on the auction block is breakfast tools…coffeemaker, waffle iron, and industrial toaster with the winning bidder being able to handout these tools as the sole source of heat to a competitor. This bidding quickly rises to $9K for Chef Athena. Chef Rina wins with a bid of $11,500 – almost one half of her money is spent on the first auction item. Has she ever played this before or even see one of the shows?
Chef Terry gets the coffeemaker, Chef Athena is given the waffle iron, and Chef Adam receives the conveyor belt toaster. The next item for auction is a chef’s knife which will be shared between three contestants. The bidding gets a little high at $10K to Chef Adam who delivers it to a table where all the others will use it and the challenge begins and the bantering starts.
Chef Terry slices corn off the cob with a spatula and places on the top burner of the coffeemaker to “fry.” As Rina gets hash going in skillet when Alton puts up batter for bi which would require an opponent to stop everything until a stack of pancakes one foot high is cooked. Harsh! Chef Athena bids $4K who wins and gives it to Chef Adam. Why did she not sabotage Chef Rina? Nine minutes remain with Rina confident as Chef Adam finishes his stack of pancakes but struggles to get two foods on his plate. Jet Tila is the judge for this episode but he does not know about the sabotages.
Chef Terry presents a sandwich with corn relish with Jet criticizing the bread for not being toasted. Chef Athena’s dish was well-seasoned but hash browns were much. Chef Rina gets rave reviews for everything leaving the last taste test of Chef Adam’s ending with garlic breath. Tila send the culinary crimes of Chef Adam out the door.
ROUND TWO: The dish for this challenge is to make the perfect calzone in thirty minutes starting with sixty seconds to shop. The auctioning begins with a Panini press to use. The bids go to $1,000 for Chef Terry who gives it to Chef Rina as payback but it could be worse. The next item is leftover pizza which is from delivery with the crust needing to be used as the dough. The winning bid is $10,500 and Chef Rina gives the crust to Chef Terry leaving Chef Athena with no sabotages this round. Five minutes remain as Chef Athena pulls her giant calzone from the oven and Chef Rina’s calzone looks like grilled flat bread. Jet Tila returns to be given Chef Terry’s version of a calzone. He is complimented on the tastes but the crusts are soggy. Chef Athena presents her dish with a dipping sauce that Jet likes but is not impressed with the sauce. Chef Rina has a calzone acceptable but not crispy enough but it is the sauce that goes bust. Tila cuts Chef Terry leaving the two women to face off in the final round.
ROUND THREE: This final round is to create fajitas. There is sixty seconds to shop before the thirty minutes to prepare immediately starts afterwards. Alton Brown will auction items randomly. The first item is a miniature cast iron skillet to cook in which Chef Athena buys for $1700 and is given to Chef Rina who has shrimp which she feels will be able to cook in the skillet. Alton brings out frozen enchiladas which the tortillas will be used instead of the fresh ones and Chef Rina gets the bid for $1600 meaning Chef Athena needs to figure out how to defrost them and opts to use the microwave. With two minutes left, plating begins with Chef Athena worried about the tortilla. Chef Rina is in trouble as well. Who will Jet Tila ax?
The tasting starts with Chef Rina with jet dishing on the chunky salsa but likes the flavorings. Chef Athena gets raves for the vegetables but criticized for the serving protocol. The winning Chef is Ashurina Younan who leaves with only $1400 which is the least a winner has ever left with. It’s not about the money; it’s about the win!
