This begins the third week of blind auditions on The Voice and as it starts, Carson Daly runs down the current statistics on each team as it stands right now – Team Usher currently has nine members, Team Shakira has nine members, Team Blake has seven members, and Team Adam has seven members unable to gain a single new singer during the blind audition last Tuesday. How will the talent stack up tonight and who gains who? This recaps runs down what went down~
The first artist of the night is Kat Perkins from Minnesota who formed a band called Scarlett Haze which opened for Bon Jovi but following a divorce disbanded. She is ready to get back in the saddle and prove she has what it takes to win this competition as she takes to the stage with “Gold Dust Woman” by Fleetwood Mac. The performance is a little flat but eventually causes Adam to strike his button followed by Shakira and then Usher. Blake holds out. Who does she select after the verbal sparring is over? Kat goes with Adam and his dry spell is over!
The next singer is Gabi Ramirez from California. He is a street performer coming from a soccer family but in college he found music and his voice. His song of choice is “The A Team” by Ed Sheeran with hopes someone picks him up to help with vocal control. He is not really talented vocally and does not get selected. Shakira states his voice is beautiful but lacking dynamics. He leaves with criticism to not hold back when given an opportunity of a lifetime.
Paula Deanda from Texas who got a shot at stardom with Clive Davis opening for Rihanna at the age of sixteen. She recorded two albums before getting dropped from the label and is back for a second shot at the stars. She sings “The Way” by Ariana Grande. Her voice is so strong with great range but needs some fine tuning as Blake goats Shakira who fails to move until he presses his button. Adam says it is a “no brainer” but Blake is a “no brainer” in a different way. Adam plugs for Shakira but who does Paula choose? She is the newest member of Team Blake.
Up next is Jake Barker from Florida whose first YouTube video got a manager and a trip to New York but he did not go anywhere. In his first live stage performance, he sings “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars. It is a different take on the song but he is good and Usher thinks so as he pushes his button in approval. Shakira is tempted but holds back. Adam does not and finally Shakira joins the gang. Let the wars begin as the coaches are amazed this is his first live performance. Who does Jake team with? Coach Usher makes the best pitch and Team Usher gains a new member with only two spots remaining.
The Freshman” by The Verve Pipe and Austin Ellis who sings “Drift Away” by Dobie Gray leaving only two spots remaining to fill Team Adam. Blake Shelton added Cali Tucker, who is stated to be a country legend Tanya Tucker’s niece, singing “Black Velvet” by Alannah Myles.
Usher has only one artist yet to select. Will it be hopeful Luke Cooper from Louisiana? He is a recovered addict turned psychiatric nurse singing “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons. There are parts a little sharp but not a bad performance overall but does any judge want to risk? Almost Usher but no one bites.
The next artist is Ria Eaton of Massachusetts whose mother was a ballerina. This is a family who has struggled through this economic crisis most Americans face with job and housing loss. This is an opportunity for this young woman to make a pronounced change in the life of her family who has always been there to support her. Does she have the chops? She takes the stage singing “Cups (When I’m Gone)” by Anna Kendrick. Blake challenges Shakira once more as both hit buttons at the last minute. Usher and Adam pick on Blake while calling Shakira a “SheWolf.” Who does she choose in the end? Ria chooses Team Blake and he blames the duet of Levine and Usher as the reason Shakira did not nab this girl.
Cierra Mickins from Alaska whose father was a chaplain in the Air Force. She hopes to turn at least one chair with her choice of song as “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley. What a voice with runs that seem as natural as her talent. Shakira rings in as does Blake. Usher joins at the last note with Blake calling foul and illegal motion of the hand as Shakira tries to win points with a hug. Cierra joins Team Shakira. Usher thinks he might be able to steal her voice later.
Following this performance is Tyler Montgomery from Missouri whose mom dressed him as Elvis as a young child. His voice is to surprise everyone especially the coaches. He learned music as part of the recovery following his father’s tragic death by fire. He sings “I Wish” by Stevie Wonder. No one loves his voice even if it more soprano that most men could pull off…Blake Shelton is shocked by the fact he is a dude. They all thought the song choice is wrong and want him to return after they made him run a line to prove he was actually singing.
The coaches get more competitive as it comes down to final spots on teams with the duet of Alaska Holloway and Madison Metcalf from Oklahoma calling themselves Alaska & Madi. They met while performing with American Kids and went on to win nationals. According to the girls, Blake Shelton has also won this competition sporting a mullet. Their song is “Barton Hollow” by The Civil Wars and open with awesomely strong vocal harmony. Adam turns followed by Blake. Who gets the duo? Team Blake! He now has only one spot to fill as does Usher.
While Adam is stomping around, the show prepares to hear the voice of Ddendyl from Washington, D.C. whose home life is different. Her father plays the bagpipes in full kilt. According to her father, she has a vast range and has studied music but she is not going where she wants at the moment. Her song “Stand by Me” by Ben E. King is what her dreams are hung on tonight. Her voice is so unique with many influences like Janis Joplin and gets the immediate attention of Shakira but it is the ending notes that perk the ears of Usher who leaves the artist for Shakira whose team she is now on.
Some artists who performed but did not make the cut include Theresa Payne singing “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé, Bryson Dunn singing “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Whitney Houston, and Bree Teal singing “We Don’t Need Another Hero” by Tina Turner.
Before the final performance of the night takes the stage, Carson runs down the current standings which is Team Blake with eleven members, Team Shakira with eleven members, Team Adam with ten members, and Team Usher with eleven members. John Kaufman from Indiana sings “One More Try” by George Michael in the performance of his life time to land a spot on Team Adam after getting the only “all coach” turn of the night. It is an incredible audition. All coaches only have one spot on their team to fill when the blind auditions return tomorrow night.
