It’s an annual event that graces the cover of People magazine when they name their “Sexiest Man Alive” each year. Yesterday, 10/5/2018, we learned that the face on the cover this year is Idris Elba. He also received the title of Order of the British Empire for his services to drama.
Many wonder how People picks their winner every year. In 2012, USA Today interviewed Julie Jordan, a senior writer at People, who added “We watch these guys over the year, and someone always bubble to the surface… It’s a matter of looking at the whole entire year.” She also stated that they “pay attention to comments on People.com,” and they ask “female celebrities” to pick their favorites.
Idrissa Akuna Elba OBE is a British actor, producer, musician and DJ known for playing drug trafficker Stringer Bell on the HBO series The Wire, DCI John Luther on the BBC One series Luther and Nelson Mandela in the biographical film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. He has been nominated four times for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film, winning one and was nominated five times for a Primetime Emmy Award.
Not only is Elba good-looking enough for the title, but he’s also incredibly talented to boot — but still, it sounds like this honor was still pretty surprising for him.
“I was like, ‘Come on, no way. Really?’” Elba told the magazine. “Looked in the mirror, I checked myself out. I was like, ‘Yeah, you are kind of sexy today.’ But to be honest, it was just a nice feeling. It was a nice surprise — an ego boost for sure.”
The 46 year-old Brit used his win to urge Americans to turn out for Tuesday’s midterm elections.
The actor’s recent credits include Thor: Ragnarok and Molly’s Game. He also runs his own record label, 7Wallace, and has his own clothing line under British brand Superdry. In February he proposed to his girlfriend, 29-year-old model Sabrina Dhowre.
Elba is the 33rd person to take the Sexiest Man Alive crown. Last year’s winner was country star, Blake Shelton.
The “Sexiest Man Alive” edition of People is on stands this month.
