If you want to watch a Christmas movie that is suitable for the entire family, you have to see The Christmas Chronicles. It has a modern twist on the story of Santa Claus and his reindeer’s annual trip around the world on Christmas Eve. The story of sister and brother, Kate and Teddy Pierce, whose Christmas Eve plan to catch Santa Claus on camera turns into an unexpected journey that most kids could only dream about.
This cute movie stars Kurt Russell as Santa. The movie has a bit of The Goonies coupled with a dose of Gremlins. You might at times feel like you just watched a scene from Star Wars.
The film takes place in modern times. Often you will hear one-liners of phrases you hear today that make Santa hilariously funny. At times, you will say, “What am I watching?” Russell is working with a pair of kids (Judah Lewis and Darby Camp) to save Christmas after his sleigh crashes. The trio has a wild night including a car chase in a stolen vehicle and Santa getting tossed in the slammer (where he jams out with a jailhouse rock band).
The film portrays the age difference sibling rivalry and how they learn lessons on life by sticking together to save Christmas.
Oliver Hudson [Russell’s step-son] plays the main kids’ father, who’s died as the movie begins but acts as posthumous inspiration for the youngsters’ rekindling their Christmas spirit.
Oliver’s character is crucial, Russell says, “because what you see in the very beginning has to carry throughout the movie without seeing him again, and it’s what gives it its emotional impact at the end.”
He adds that he looked at the movie as “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to play Santa “because you have to be the right age, you have to be the right kind of person. And I’m looking forward to all my family seeing this because there’s a lot of Easter eggs throughout that really only my family members can totally appreciate.”
You probably have your list of favorites that you watch each year but this new movie is one that shouldn’t be missed. At the top of that list is Netflix’s most recent original film, The Christmas Chronicles.
