Smurfs Coming to the Big Screen

Los Angeles (CMR) - Sony Pictures Animation and Columbia Pictures are bringing the Smurfs to the big screen.
David Weiss and J. David Stern, who wrote Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third, are currently in negotiations to write the screenplay for the live action/animated Smurf movie.
This will mark Sony’s first hybrid movie and after the success of Alvin in the Chipmunks last year they have a good chance of similar success with the Smurfs being done this way.
The Smurfs cartoon was first created in 1958 by a Belgian cartoonist named Pierre Culliford (Peyo) and was originally called Les Schtroumpfs.
This was made into a TV series that ran from 1981-1990.
“The Smurfs are one of the best-known franchises, and among the most beloved collection of characters in the world,” Columbia co-president Doug Belgrad said. “We’re very excited to introduce a new generation to Papa Smurf, Smurfette and the other smurftastic Smurfs in all of their ‘three-apple-tall’ glory.”
