Los Angeles - And then there were Seven.
Michael Johns has been voted off American Idol.
Joining Johns in the bottom three thiss week was Carly Smithson and Syesha Mercado.
The vote comes as a bit of a surprise as most of the talk around the internet after Tuesday was Syesha Mercado or Carly Smithson were the likely candidates to be sent home.
This week, Johns sang “Dream On” by Aerosmith. Randy Jackson said, “You’ve got to keep on rocking, dude.” Paula Abdul said, “I’m such a big fan of yours, and you know that.” Simon Cowell said, “I’m going to miss you, you’re a very, very good singer, and very, very nice guy.” Michael Johns closed the show with an encore performance of “Dream On.”
The competition now only has seven contestants left; Brooke White, David Cook, Kristy Lee Cook, Syesha Mercardo, Jason Castro, Carly Smithson and the favorite, David Archuleta.

That Michael Johns is going is just a measure of the mediocrity of popularity. He is outstanding and the popular vote doesn’t always recognize that.
I’m completely discusted………….Michael Johns should have been in the top 2. I’ve never been so upset by the show and have watched it for several years. And, the way he was dismissed………shame on Amerian Odol…….shame on Seacrest.
It is obvious that Michael Johns should not have been eliminated, but what made it so bad was what Ryan said. We all thought they were going to not vote anyone off.
Shame on Ryan for getting everyone’s hopes up.
