Last year’s American Idol runner-up, Adam Lambert, has released the cover to his (fans’) much-anticipated first album, “For Your Entertainment”. Everyone, from his critics to his most loyal fans, is buzzing about the interesting choice for his album debut post-American Idol. Lambert, who was the antithesis of A.I. winner and Arkansas native, Kris Allen, was not shy about, well…anything. He performed with abandon, made no pretense about who he is, and after the show’s finale, openly admitted he was a homosexual man. Adam was just Adam: Elvis Pressley-style good looks, fierce outfit and accessory choices, and even fiercer vocal capabilities.
This guy strikes me as someone with a pretty great sense of humor, and certainly not someone who takes himself too seriously. For his cover, Adam is caked in make-up, donning a wild blue wig, and a pair of earrings. The cover is a throw-back to glam bands of the Eighties, and with his leather-glove bound hand lightly touching his face, painted black fingernails and all, this cover is really something to see.
Fans worry that album sales will be negatively affected in the heterosexual buyer demographic, if they are potentially put off by such a “festive” album cover. Others criticize the choice for being far too Eighties, or far too gay, saying he looks like he’s trying to pull off the transvestite look. I think the album cover is ridiculous, and is meant to be; that is what makes it so funny. If he performs on this album like he performed on Idol, belting out notes like the late, great, Freddie Mercury, then I say more power to him. Put a tiger wearing overalls playing a harmonica on the front, for all I care: it’s just a cover. Do fans not buy albums for the music anymore?
