The highly successful and wildly popular “American Girl” series by Mattel has issued a new doll for their collection that is raising more than just a few eyebrows and questions. With life-size and life-like dolls that range from Jewish to Native American to a “Great Depression” doll, this newest addition, Gwen, like her counterparts, comes with a history—a story put down in print for young eyes to read.
But, “Gwen”, with her light hair and white dress with the pink sash, has a history different from that of the other American Girl dolls. Gwen’s father has walked out on her family, her mother has lost her job and her grip, and they have gone under. They have been resigned to sleeping in a car—Gwen is homeless. How much could a doll who is seeking to teach little girls about the issue of homelessness in America cost, you ask? Well, for a whopping $95, and an extra $20 to “fix” her hair, your daughter or niece, too, can learn a bizarre, mixed message about homelessness in America, and quite possibly have a few interesting questions for you about why little Gwen and her mother had such a terrible Daddy. It seems Gwen the doll packs quite a doctrinal punch with her steep homeless price tag.
