This week, some of the self-proclaimed King of Pop, Michael Jackson’s memorabilia went up for auction. Since MJ’s untimely death at age fifty on June 25, 2009, his stardom and world-wide following has not waned. For many fans, they feel they grew up with Michael and the Jackson Five, and for them, a chance to acquire even the tiniest piece of one of his tours, or an outfit from a video makes them feel connected to the deceased music icon. One New Yorker noted, “I can’t even tell you what it would mean for me. It would be like a dream come true,” as she waited to bid on an item that might fall under her $5,000 auction budget.
This latest sale was held by Julien’s Auctions of Los Angeles, California, and the items offered fetched far more than originally expected. The auction was held at the Hard Rock Café in Times Square. And onlooker eating chicken fingers noted, “That’s what death brings upon celebrity.” The college student/diner, Brendan Doyle, added, “Jackson’s death was such a tragedy at such a young age that it pushed up prices.” The sparkly, white glove that Michael Jackson became known for, which originally appeared during Jackson’s 1983 ‘Moonwalk’, sold for a whopping $350,000 plus taxes, according to the Associated Press. Michael Jackson’s jacket from his 1989 “Bad” tour fetched $225,000, twenty times its original estimated price of $8,000.
