On what would be the most deadly day on American soil in our nation’s history, September 11, 2001, there were about half a million text messages sent out by victims to their loved ones before they met their fate, according to whistleblower site Wikileaks. The site reports that these messages that spread out across the nation like wildfire contained the panic, the horror, the fear, and the terror of that fateful day.
Though Wikileaks will not divulge whether their source of the text messages was legal, government, law enforcement, industry or from a private citizen, they feel they are not out of line, that they are “helping to maintain an uncensorable part of this day’s record in more detail than has ever been provided before,” according to the CNN report. Text messages posted range from heart-wrenching good-byes to ‘I’m okays” to reports to those inside of what was being seen on television, and some even steer the emergency response, as well as the direction of Air Force One, and confirm the safety of the then-First Family. In what will surely be met with equal parts praise and criticism, the posting of these messages is certain to stir deep emotions as Americans remember that infamous day: September 11, 2001.
