British funny man, Sasha Baron Cohen, creator and star of the “Borat” and “Bruno” movies, has gotten himself into hot legal waters, with a portrayal in his latest film. Palestinian grocer Ayman Abu Aita, who was featured in a segment of “Bruno” has filed suit against several entities and people, including Cohen, for a total of $112 million. Cohen (as Bruno) interviewed Abu Aita in “Bruno” and his portion of the film was captioned “Terrorist group leader, Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade”; Abu Aita claims this false representation of him has caused him to receive multiple death threats since the film’s release.
Cohen appeared on David Letterman’s “Late Show” to promote the film, and joked with Letterman that the movie’s producers had found a “real terrorist” through a contact in the CIA. What was meant to be a joke, has turned out to be anything but funny for Abu Aita, who claims he believed Cohen was a German filmmaker compiling a documentary on Palestine. Abu Aita has now filed suit against NBC, Universal Studios, David Letterman, and Sasha Baron Cohen, saying his life has been ruined since the film’s release.
