Yesterday Reese Witherspoon made headlines when she conceded that Michelle Obama has “ousted” her character Elle Woods (from the movie “Legally Blonde”) as the most stylish woman ever to come to Washington D.C.

The occasion was the annual International Women of Courage Awards, and Witherspoon was attending as the global ambassador for the Avon Foundation. In her speech, she entertained the audience by complaining humorously that Elle just no longer holds the title as most stylish woman to ever take on Washington politics.

“As an actress, I have always sought out roles that portrayed women as strong and powerful, such as Elle Woods, who was in the Legally Blonde movies,” said Witherspoon.

“Elle Woods happened to be the biggest fashionista who ever came to Washington until Michelle Obama. Thanks a lot.”

Later, when the First Lady took the podium, she returned the compliment, saying that the entire crowd looked fabulous.
