Spymaster in “Mission Impossible” and host of “Biography”, Peter Graves has died of a heart attack today in his home in Pacific Palisades, CA.
In spite of the two roles mentioned above, Graves is possibly most remembered for his role in the comedy “Airplane,” in which he plays the seriously funny pedophile pilot.
In 1997, Grave recalled his reaction to being asked to read for the part.
“I tore my hair and ranted and raved and said, ‘This is insane,’” he said. He then told his agent to tell them to get a comedian, that he did not want to ruin his career saying these lines. When they explained that the secret to their spoof was to be the classic deadpan behavior of his character in “Mission Impossible” he relented and the marvelous character of Captain Oveur was born. Graves even reprised the role in “Airplane II” in 1982.
1in 1971, Graves won a Golden Globe Award for his work in “Mission Impossible,” and in 1997, he and “Biography” won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Informational Series.
