In the first papal visit to Britain in almost 30 years, Queen Elizabeth will be hosting Pope Benedict at her Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, September 16 to 19. This is actually the first official papal visit to Britain ever, and the first papal visit since Pope John Paul II paid a pastoral visit in 1982.
“The papal visit represents an unprecedented opportunity to strengthen ties between the UK and the Holy See on action to tackle poverty and climate change as well as the important role of faith in creating strong and cohesive communities,” said Scotland Secretary Jim Murphy, who is in charge of visit preparations.
As part of his trip, Pope Benedict will perform the beatification, which is one step on the path to sainthood for Cardinal John Henry Newman at a public mass in Coventry. Cardinal Newman, 1801 – 1890, was a theologian and educationalist and one of the most prominent converters from Anglicism to Catholicism, as well as being a main protagonist of the Oxford Movement which has done much to bring the Church of England closer to the Catholic Church.
