Los Angeles (CMR) - For the first time in Dancing With the Stars history, the show introduced four never-before-seen styles of dance: West Coast swing, the hustle, salsa and the jitterbug. Two words: Giddy. Up.
Not only were the dances challenging for the stars, but it was a struggle for the professional dancers as well because most of them have never danced the styles. So with eight couples left, two were assigned to each style and off they went.
The judges were extremely generous with some of the scores tonight. And not so much for others. Despite Lacey getting reamed by the judges for not spotlighting Lance enough, the choreography of their routine, the West Coast swing (Lacey’s specialty), and the way their performed it, they kicked off the night with 7s. Respectable. But fast-forward to the halfway point of the show to Cloris and Corky’s salsa, which for me, was like watching a slow-moving train about to crash into a mountain, earned them the exact same scores. Um, whaaaaaaat!!??!!
Also, Toni and Alec’s swing earned them decent marks, but Susan and Tony, who looked like they were tiptoeing the hustle got them the same points — both couples finished the night with a score of 22. But I have to give props to La Lucci. An MRI showed she had fractured two bones in her foot but despite the soft steps she was taking, she still performed a solid routine.
And Susan wasn’t the only one dancing with an injury. Front-runner Brooke hurt her foot during rehearsals on Sunday, when she came down hard while doing a front flip in her high-energy jitterbug with Derek. Thankfully, after X-rays, it was determined to be a severe bruise; not ideal but something she can easily bounce back from.
And unlike Susan, Brooke was anything but ginger on her feet. Her and Derek’s jitterbug earned them two 10s and the two are the leaders once again. But a mere point off were Julianne and Cody, also dancing the jitterbug. Call the Hannah Montana star the Comeback kid; Cody was struggling in the middle of the pack all season, but his amazingly energetic performance proved he’s a real contender in the competition. Plus, he and Julianne totally captured the comical I Love Lucy aspect of it, with Cody as Desi and Julianne as a more-than-convincing Lucy.
Maurice and Cheryl’s salsa made Cloris and Corky’s look like it was danced in slow motion. Ditto for Warren and Kym’s groovy hustle. Both couples had the crowd on their feet.

I never would have thought that Brooke would be such a talented dancer. She really does deserve to win this season. I would not think she would be able to master the techniques of such dances but she has…. Can’t wait for tonight to listen to Julianne Hough sing!!! This show just gets better and better!
