Review: The Vampire Diaries On The CW

The Vampire Diaries, surprising mini hit for the CW Television Network, has carved out a niche for vampire lovers. In the middle of a year that has seen hits like the “Twilight” movies and the HBO series “True Blood” become a massive fans fueled frenzy, “The Vampire Diaries” has steadily gained a cult like following. The show is based on the young adult novel series of writer,  Lisa Jane “L.J.” Smith and tries to engage its audience on the themes of “longing and loss” that have not graced prime time television for quite a while.

We watched this show for the first time a few weeks ago and found it to be quite refreshing. No it’s not like the darker and more adult themed “True Blood”, but “The Vampire Diaries” gives us a deeper feel for the emotions of its target audience. Writer Kevin Williamson explained, “We’re dealing with a cross-genre, in a way. There’s a lot going on here. We have the teen element, the teen-drama aspect, which you can compare to Dawson’s Creek. We’re not really trying to push that heightened type of dialogue, though; we are trying to stay true to the books, in that respect. But it’s not just a teen show. This is not a high-school show. It’s more of a small-town show. Once you get past the premise of girl-meets-boy-meets-vampire, we’re telling a story about a town. That’s one of the things I loved about the books — L.J. Smith created this huge, rich mythology — and we’re immersing ourselves into that. The vampire story is our way in.”

In a sea of seemingly mindless reality shows and deep dramas, “The Vampire Diaries” gives us a delight because it connects so well with us. Kevin Williamson has another hit on his hands. We Highly recommend this show!
