Schmitty_New_Yorkie_OprahThis Friday, the queen of daytime talk, Oprah Winfrey, will announce live to her studio audience the details of her show soon coming to an end. Thursday night, Oprah’s Chicago-based production company, Harpo, announced that Oprah will fill in the details of her benchmark show’s impending end. Reports indicate that the show will quit taping in 2011, completing its twenty-fifth season on the air.
Oprah Winfrey began her television career in Nashville, Tennessee and Baltimore, Maryland, before moving to Chicago in 1984 to accept a position on “A.M. Chicago”. The show was renamed “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 1985. Ms. Winfrey established Harpo in 1986, the same year her show went into syndication. The production company expanded, and Winfrey opened Harpo Studios in the West Loop neighborhood of Chicago in 1990.
Oprah has become a one-woman, one-name empire, inspiring millions of viewers (and magazine subscribers) with her spiritual takes on everyday life, and finding one’s purpose in the world. She is more than a business tycoon, she is a humanitarian and advocate for education and literacy worldwide. Unlike many competitors that have since faded away, Oprah Winfrey has stood the test of television time, choosing to do it her way: using television for good, not being used by television.
