Open Mouth, Insert Foot
That phrase is exactly how to describe what Elisabeth Hasselbeck did to Erin Andrews when she criticized her costumes on Dancing With the Stars (see video below). Hasselbeck said Erin should not be wearing “next to nothing” on live TV with all the issues she’s been having with stalkers and threatening emails. This morning, while discussing the Dancing With the Stars elimination on May 4 (Pamela Anderson, by the way) Hasselbeck issued an apology while being choked with tears (see video below). She obviously feels sick about what she said, as it came off completely wrong.
Although Hasselbeck was no doubt trying to be funny, it wasn’t. Apparently Hasselbeck buys into the theory that a victim is responsible for what bad people do to her. By saying that Erin should not be showing so much skin, she is saying that it’s Erin’s fault what happened to her, and what might happen to her. That is incorrect thinking. It’s wrong to stalk someone and violate their privacy, and what the victim does is irrelevant. Each person is responsible only for his or her own behavior.
Hasselbeck may be a victim herself, and needs professional help with the guilt that most victims feel. That seems the most likely explanation for why she would make such an insane statement. Either that she just doesn’t have a brain connected to her mouth. Heaven knows I’ve been guilty of that problem myself on occasion!
