Review: The Departed

Arlington (CMR) - Martin Scorsese has once again given his fans a rare glimpse of talent with the movie “The Departed”.
It’s a story of manipulation and deceit set on a modern day Queens and New York.
A mob boss training a young kid and grooming him for the police force slowly rises to the ranks to the delight of his boss. On the other hand, an upcoming police was pulled out before his first assignment and planted to be in a covert operation that would spy the mob boss. Leonardo Di Caprio plays the good undercover cop William Costigan while Matt Damon plays Colin Sullivan, the smooth talking police groomed by the mob.
Unknowingly standing between them is Jack Nicholson playing none other than the mob boss Frank Costello.
The story is fast paced that you have to be at the edge of your seat just to follow through the story. But don’t think that this movie will make you think like a Jeopardy contestant, instead this movie is a delight to follow as the next step or conversation could be the end of someone.
Of course you expect that the three major characters would live to be there until the end of the film but you allow that just to get the movie. The three characters provided a remarkable backdrop for the story that everyone just wants to have a piece of the mob boss as he strut all over Queens without any problem.
Which brings me to the point of looking at other remarkable actors in the story. Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone and Vira Farmiga consistently gave light to the story and showed how things can be different with just a flick of a finger. Most of the time, they might not be credited for being in this movie but I couldn’t imagine this movie if these actors didn’t play the said characters. Finally, Mark Wahlberhg played a tough guy without having to mumble too many words about the gun that he has to use.
Alec Baldwin also delievers a solid performance as an FBI agent.
If you’re looking for a movie that is worth two hours of your life, “The Departed” should be on your list.
This seemingly harmless movie will take you at the edge of your seat as each character plays out until the very end or at least until they die.
The gripping end of the movie will make you think of the movie as a Shakespearean masterpiece brought to life by Scorsese.
CMR gives “The Departed” a rating of 5/5.
