Arlington (CMR) - The hype on this movie is amazing. Using everything the internet has to offer, the people behind Cloverfield has amazed movie addicts as well as spoiler fanatics to search for clues and ideas on what the movie looked like.
The trailer doesn’t give out much but the buzz has encouraged most people to go online and look for the latest clues about the monsters in Cloverfield.
When the movie arrived, it didn’t let out a fuse. Maybe a small pack has been confused and irritated about the movie but I tell you – the hype is well worth it.
The movie starts out in a Blair Witch Project mode where you’ll be able to see the movie in a very unique perspective. Well the whole movie stays that way but you will not be seeing something creepy just like in the Blair Witch Project (To be fair with BWP, it still a remarkable movie on its own). Almost everyone or at least the yuppies could relate to the daily struggle of career, our love ones and peer pressure.
The partying and the love conflicts are there – everything the Manhattan has to offer for the young adults of this generation. Throw in monsters who want to wipe out the whole city; you have a recipe for success.
Abrams was interviewed about the film and I can remember well that he wanted to create a US counterpart of Godzilla. Unfortunately, I have to disagree with the highly imaginative director about this. Yeah Cloverfield is a great movie but I don’t think it’s that great that we have to crown it as America’s answer to the highly revered Godzilla. We just have to wait for Cloverfield’s sequel and say something about that fact, which as of now is still on the rumor mill.
The idea of keeping us in the edge of our seat regarding the true identity of the monster is brilliant. Using modern technology with first person film shooting, the monster doesn’t become a blunt instrument of destruction. It leaves so much to our imagination which even adds to the thought of horror and destruction. Leave it to Abrams to scare us silly in our theater seats.
By leaving out some of the details, it has left out filling out the holes instead of debating what it should be.
Overall, Cloverfield is a movie that gives its viewers a cinematic ride of the lifetime. It promises more and Abrams fans definitely got a kick from this movie.
CMR gives Cloverfield a rating of 4/5.
