Semi Pro review

Arlington (CMR) - Will Ferrell comes back with another sports spoof with “Semi-Pro”.

With all the hype and publicity this guy does to his film, it’s virtually impossible that you haven’t heard about this film and what’s it about.

From super bowl commercials to funny internet skits and photos with Heidi Klum in Sports Illustrated, Will Ferrell has done more than enough to get us hyped for the movie.

Just like his previous films, his ability to play his role even outside the film is remarkable.

I think he has bested Larry King when he was interviewed as Ricky Bobby for his NASCAR spoof movie.
But unlike most of his movies, his latest effort didn’t live up to the hype.

Semi-Pro’s story is not that deep where the movie is oftentimes turned through a simple dictation. I was expecting a movie where Ferrell had to go up with all the glory and go down with a tremendous personal problem only to live again and show everyone why he’s the one. Along the way, he’s being funny that even the twist wherein his problem arises should even be funnier.

This time, the story is just another short story and the twists and turns easily changes like you’re skimming through the pages of the magazine for pictures.
I’m not saying the movie is really bad. In fact, the movie could be at par with some of the movies released today that are supposed to be funny – or even better. Everyone could have seen this and enjoyed a hearty laugh for an hour and 25 minutes.
Which leads me to the MPAA rating. Everyone could have watched this as his previous sports movies are all PG-13. Personally, I think they have inadvertently made this movie into an R with all the sexual slurs considering the setting was during the hippie years of the 70s. But they have stood with what they wrote and said – braving the rating and hoping that young adults would go out and watch the film.
Lastly, the additional characters has done a great job in letting Will Ferrell take the leading role and let everyone do his thing and carry everyone. But that backfired on Mr. Ferrell: it’s good that he takes the leading role but not all funny moments should be hogged by a single character.
If you’re looking for good laugh without expecting too much, here’s Will Ferrell again in Semi-Pro. We’re just hoping he would do better next time.

CMR gives Sem Pro a rating of 2/5.
