Whip It, the just released Roller Derby movie based on the novel “Derby Girl” by Shauna Cross is a delightful coming of age movie about a young teen wanting to escape the bonds of a small town and controlling parents.
Drew Barrymore, star of “Charlies Angels”, is showing us her ever increasing talents as she brances out into directing films. Ms. Barrymore also co stars in the film. Drew has put together a nice film that blends a perfect mixture of humor, action, and comradery.
Ellen Page, “Juno” , stars as Whip It’s main character Bliss Cavender. A rebellious teen wanting to escape the bonds of family and a small town and find her own way. The delightful Miss Page carries this film well and her performance is a refreshing change from the “Darker” works she has previously acted in.
The film is a bit long at almost 2 hours. The time will go by fast as Barrymore and Page will keep you laughing and cheering the whole time. This is the type of movie one wants to see when they want a light night out. I give this film 5 stars.
