In a surprisingly delightful remake of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s story of the London super sleuth, Sherlock Holmes, producer Joel Silver brings a buff, slightly off-kilter, and brilliant version of the man to his silver screen production. In the Christmas 2009 version of “Sherlock Holmes,” the famed detective’s role is reprised by Robert Downey, Jr. with his trusty, astute sidekick, Dr. Watson, played by the ever-handsome and charming Jude Law. Downey, Jr. is feisty, quick-witted, and delightfully manic, whereas Law refreshes what certainly had slipped some readers’ minds: that Dr. Watson had an impressive background in the military, and was indeed a special ying to Holmes’ yang. Rachel McAdams plays Holmes’ flame, the deceptive and alluring Irene Adler; Kelly Reilly plays the beguiling red headed fiancé of Dr. Watson, Ms. Mary. The new version of this tale may displease some purists of the mystery genre, but for the rest, the amped up action and sex appeal, and the unexpected amount of whoop-ass the reclusive Holmes (of old) dishes out will seem like “Fight Club” a la late-1800s-London. Downey, Jr. and Law and their ladies have great chemistry together, and the script is fresh and funny and fun. Unexpected fight scenes, science wonders and weaponry, mixed with refreshingly likable characters may indeed cause viewers to ask, “Was Sherlock Holmes always this cool?”
