Director Antoine Fuqua’s latest film, “Brooklyn’s Finest” delivers the same intensity as Training Day, even though the plot isn’t quite at the same level. The actors deliver grippingly raw and powerful portrayals of men who are pushed to the edge and are in desperate situations. The actors are believable and sympathetic and almost painful to watch.

Ethan Hawke plays a cop who is desperate for money and explores every chance he has to steal it from drug dealers. Don Cheadle plays an undercover cop who is struggling with psychological issues, including a little too much sympathy toward a former cellmate played by Wesley Snipes. Richard Gere plays a veteran cop who is about to retire and who is considering suicide. Unfortunately for him, he is ordered to train rookies during his last week of work. These characters are all loosely connected in a plot that sometimes struggles to stay cohesive. But it doesn’t seem to matter. The mere struggles of each man becomes the plot and the viewers are swept up in the superb acting and richly vivid cinematography.
